Periodically, someone on the knitlist asks about knitting magazines, so I decided to put together this web page with a list of the currently published knitting magazines. You can click on the title of the magazine to go to the magazine's web site. The comments are my own, personal opinions about the magazines.
Cast On Magazine is free with a paid membership to The Knitting Guild of America. I have occasionally seen it on the stands at Border's. Cast On focuses on education, with a number of articles and some patterns. There is also news from TKGA guilds.
Family Circle Easy Knitting is available at chain bookstores and many grocery stores. The emphasis is on simple knitting patterns for men, women and children. There are always a few crochet patterns, as well.
InKnitters is available at a limited number of knitting stores and by subscription. InKnitters focuses on techniques, with mostly articles and a few unusual designs.
Interweave Knits is available at most knitting stores as well as the chain bookstores. IWK is about half patterns and half articles. Most of the patterns are women's sweaters and tend to be classic styles with a modern touch.
Knit 'N Style is available at chain bookstores. It is published every other month. It is mostly patterns and a lot of the patterns are reprints of yarn company leaflets. There is an emphasis on novelty and other unusual yarns.
Knitters is available at most knitting stores and chain bookstores. The emphasis in Knitters is on patterns. The patterns tend to be interesting to knit, if not the most cutting edge of fashion. The patterns come in the largest range of sizes.
Knitting Digest is a smaller sized publication that is available at the chain bookstores. It is almost all patterns and appeals more to older knitters. They usually have one or two of the patterns available for free on the website.
Vogue Knitting is available at most knitting stores and chain bookstores. Vogue Knitting is mostly patterns, with a few articles. The fashions tend to be more stylish than the other magazines and tend to run small. I find that VK appeals to younger knitters more than the other magazines. The more expensive yarns are often used in patterns. |
